Proxies

Proxies are special Formats used for displaying a preview of an assets main original format for display purposes by iconik, and in the case of Edit Proxies for working with NLE software.

Typically all the files that are supported by iconik are not supported for viewing in web browsers used to access iconik. Even if they are they can be of high-bitrate and take time to download and view so iconik automatically create proxies that can be viewed and of a quality that is good enough to preview the content of the asset.

Proxy Types

Video Proxies

For supported video formats iconik create a proxy in an MP4 wrapper using the h.264 codec. This can also have two audio channels (as supported by the majority of web browsers). This video proxy is used by the Video Player.

  • MP4 Wrapper
    • h.264 video codec with configurable size of either 1080p (1920px * 1080px) or 720p (1280px * 720px).
    • AAC 2 channel audio
    • Framerate is matched to the framerate of the original video where we can. Please note some cameras do not set that they are dropframe correctly

Please note that we also support an additional Edit Proxy format for editing purposes to get around some of these limitations

Audio Proxies

Audio proxies are created from supported Audio-only formats for playback in the web.

Image Proxies

Image proxies are a single large preview of the original image in JPG(JPEG) format. These are configurable for the size generated.

Proxy Access

Secure playback

When requesting a proxy a secure signed link is created for viewing the proxy, this link times out after a short time and makes it unsuitable for sharing. The video player in iconik has right click disabled to discourage copying of the video link for this reason.

Proxy Statuses

Proxies can have the same status that Files have.

Proxy Management

Proxies are managed from the asset page in the files panel. See Proxy Files Administration for more information.
